Sellafield Nuclear Facility PA Case Study

PA System Aids Safety at Sellafield Nuclear Facility

med_snw2Midland Communications Company Ltd’s brief to provide a replacement PA System for the Trent Building pool storage facility within Sellafield Nuclear facility, which still has many years remaining of the long and complex decommissioning process, was to ensure high quality, clear safety messaging to maintain safety, which is always of absolute paramount concern to the facility.

At the core of the PA and Paging system was a custom built install of a dedicated Audio Rack working as the ‘control centre’. Midland Communications can supply these to handle anything from a small single zone speech-only system, to a multi-zone system combining speech and music. Monitoring and battery back-up can also be accommodated.

Atlas Sound Horn Loudspeakers were installed throughout the facility, chosen for their renowned high quality build and sound clarity and also for their high IP rating and performance under harsh conditions.

med_snw3Midland Communications Company Ltd also installed Direct Communications ‘Store & Forward’ Desk Paging Microphones to counter-act the high ambient noise levels when broadcasting live voice messaging.

Hardwick Hall Visitor Centre PA Case Study

med_hardwick1The National Trust’s historic Hardwick Hall, near Chesterfield, has recently undergone a transformation of its Stableyard buildings to provide a ‘front of house’ welcome to the thousands of visitors attending each year; the development of a brand new Visitor Centre to provide information, retail and catering facilities.

The newly developed Visitor Centre will provide a starting point for all visitors to the Elizabethan Hardwick Hall and, therefore, providing a pleasant acoustic environment paired with clear information via the PA was paramount to the development’s audio system design.

As Professional Audio Installers – Midland Communications – were tasked with the project and designed a fully integrated Public Address and Background Music rackbuild system to provide zoned coverage both in the Visitor Centre and redeveloped Stable Block.

Iscoyd Park Hotel - Portable Bose L1 Case Study

Bose System Enhances Wedding Venue

Iscoyd Park is an 18th century manor house located on the Wales/Shropshire border that has been tastefully refurbished to create a stunning venue for weddings, conferences or parties. The new Garden Room, with its huge arches and stone floors, creates the perfect setting for a wedding, after which guests are invited to move into the adjoining bar and marquee for the wedding breakfast and evening entertainment.

iscoyd_dance_area2-300As part of the refurbishment, Midland Communications Public Address System Division were invited to specify a high quality audio system to deliver recorded music before, during and after the ceremony, with wireless microphones for the speeches and a system for live or recorded music at the reception in the marquee.

Following the requirements of the venue owners, and working closely with Bose, Midland selected a system comprising of Bose FreeSpace loudspeakers in the Garden Room, bar and side room, with a portable Bose system in the marquee. The high ceilings and hard surfaces of the Garden Room created some high reverberation challenges, but the full range speakers were strategically placed in vertical mode at relatively high levels to overcome these issues. White speakers were selected to blend exceptionally well into the white decor, so they are unobtrusive whilst delivering clear speech and music clarity.

The marquee, which can seat 150 guests, now has a Bose system that can deliver live music or recorded music via iPod or CD, either as background sound during the wedding breakfast, or foreground music to which guests can dance the night away.

Nottingham Community Housing Assoc. - Sound Masking

Privacy Enhanced with Sound Masking Generator

NCHA Bridge Street (Nottingham Community Housing Association) is a Leicestershire-based supported housing project helping people with mental health needs to live independently in the community.

med_BridgeStreet2Providing tailored support to adults living in their own tenancy, the on-site management office requires high levels of privacy and confidentiality to allow support workers to discuss each individual service user’s needs.
However, with only thin walls and doors between the offices and main corridor, the Bridge Street Project Manager was becoming increasingly concerned about the potential for service users and visitors to overhear private discussions from in the corridor which should remain within the confines of the office.

To overcome this situation Midlands Communications installed a Sound Masking System.

Distributed into the public corridor area using an InterM Mixer Amplifierconnected to three i-ceilings Sound Panel loudspeakers (which provide broader area sound coverage), the resulting system provides a constant but unobtrusive ‘Pink Noise’ frequency (similar to the sound of an air conditioning unit), which ‘masks’ the voices from the offices, making them unintelligible to passers by or anyone who may try to listen in to the meetings from outside the offices.

The NCHA Project Manager and Support Workers are now able to discuss confidential issues in the offices, confident that their voices cannot be overheard in the adjoining spaces of the building.

Twinning Tea - PA Case Study

case3Trading since 1706, Twinings Tea is the UK’s leading brand for premium teas and now offers more than 100 varieties all over the world.
For the past 50 years, Twinings Tea has been blended and packaged at their main Andover factory which employs the majority of the Company’s 1000 employees.

As part of the Company’s manufacturing redevelopment program and to support the introduction of the factory’s new automated packaging line, UK integrators Midland Communications Company Ltd were asked to specify and install a complete new background music and PA paging system to communicate to and entertain the staff throughout the entire complex.

med_twinings4Midland Communications Company Ltd specified a complete public address and background music system, powered by an InterM audio rack.

The Twinings Tea custom built PA Rack features InterM’s QD range of multi-channel amplifiers, allowing for multiple source and level control to each of the individual zones throughout the factory. The rack also includes a Digital Audio Storage and Replay Unit which is loaded with a series of pre-recorded staff messages and tones which can be activated via NO/NC switches or desktop paging microphones.

The loudspeakers specified were chosen dependent on the space and ambient noise levels of the different areas of the building. A mix of Projector, Horn and Suspended speakers were specified for the production and packaging areas where clear voice and music reproduction has to compete with high ambient noise levels; whereas in quieter areas of the building (such as offices and canteen, etc)
IC Audio Wall Speakers and Ceiling Speakers were chosen to provide a wider-frequency, better tone of audio reproduction.

Bishops Wilson School - Soundfield Case Study

Opening its doors for the first time in September 2013, The Bishop Wilson C of E Primary School is a £10 million new school development which forms the heart of a new village in Chelmsley Wood, Solihull.

med_bishop wilson school 1This brand new two-form entry school and nursery has been developed not only to provide an education for the area’s 3 to 11 year olds, but also incorporates the village’s relocated church, adult learning centre, community area and health facility. The result is an outstanding educational and community development which provides a safe, secure and inspiring environment which encourages both pupils and the wider community to use and interact with the school.

Accommodating this diverse, multi-use concept requires significant flexibility of services and utilities – including the integrated audio system installed throughout the building. UK communications integrators – Midland Communications – were brought in to ensure a high quality, reliable, flexible and user-friendly system was put in place…

Midland Communications Company Ltd provided a full turn-key design-to-delivery service for all audio systems throughout the school, church and community areas. Project managing the system from the ‘ground-up’; consulting and specifying from plan drawings prior to the one-year project build, through to installation by Midland Communications’own engineers.

The main audio rack – which provides bell-timing, public address and background music distribution throughout the entire complex – features at the heart of it the InterM PX8000 Audio Matrix which provides 8 In – 8 Out signal distribution and control flexibility to each of the building’s individual zones. Additional remote control per zone is also provided using the PX8000’s RM-8000 and LM-8000 wall plate and desk mic. input/control devices.

med_bishop wilson school 3Midland Communications Company Ltd specified Soundfield Voice Reinforcement Systems for permanent installation in Bishop Wilson School’s classrooms. Soundfield classroom voice reinforcement systems are low-level audio systems featuring an infrared wireless microphone worn by the teacher to discreetly raise their voice for clear, consistent voice coverage throughout the entire classroom space.
The increased use of Soundfield as a teaching aid in the classroom has huge benefits to pupils with hearing difficulties, but is also proven to benefit mainstream students (whose concentration and understanding is significantly improved) and teachers who no longer have to raise their voices in noisy / lively teaching environments, therefore reducing problems of voice strain and stress.

Kemball Special School Classroom Voice Reinforcement

Kemball Special School is an entire new-build project to provide an inspiring learning environment for pupils with profound, multiple learning difficulties within the Stoke city area.
Built under the Building Schools for the Future programme (BSF) and opened in September 2013, Kemball Special School currently supports 69 pupils but has future capacity for 140 pupils aged 2-19 years old with a diverse range of learning and physical disabilities.
Pupils have a wide range of needs; from moderate learning difficulties to profound special needs and visual & hearing impairments.

med_kemball_school6Among the many special additions and technologies featured throughout the school, each of the 25 classrooms has been fitted with a Soundfield Classroom Voice Reinforcement System specified and installed by Midland Communications Company Ltd.
Soundfield classroom audio systems are an infrared, wireless microphone system worn by the teacher to lift the level of their voice to a volume suitable for each individual environment or activity.
Special Needs classrooms can be inherently more noisy environments and, with high pupil numbers at Kemball School having hearing impairments, ensuring that the teacher is heard clearly throughout the room is essential.

med_kemball_school2To ensure teachers are not having to raise their voices and to reduce problems of voice strain, each of the school’s classrooms features a permanently installed Soundfield voice reinforcement system with wireless microphone.
Using the Soundfield System, the teacher’s voice level is discretely raised (without being ‘loud’) to a level of clarity which benefits every child in the classroom, no matter where they sit.
As the systems utilise infrared wireless microphone technology, they are not limited by licence, channel or interference issues and a teacher can move from classroom to classroom with the same microphone which will automatically become active within that specific space.

The Soundfield systems can also be linked to Audio Frequency Induction Loop Systems (AFILS) to allow the teacher’s voice to be transmitted via Induction Loop to be received via hearing aids (switched to the ‘T’ position) worn by a number of the school’s pupils.
